Driving in Cyprus: licence and road rules
What you need to rent a car and drive here as a visitor. Rules change — check with your rental company before the trip.
An EU/EEA licence is fully valid in Cyprus, just like at home.
A UK licence is valid on its own in Cyprus — no IDP needed.
A US licence is legally valid, but rental desks or police may ask for an International Driving Permit — get one before you go.
Visitors can drive on a valid foreign licence; rental companies may ask non-EU drivers for an IDP; rental insurance usually does not cover the north.
No toll roads or vignettes.
Tip: Rental cars have red number plates that mark them as hire cars; check whether your insurance covers driving across the Green Line into the north (it usually does not).
