You will need a passport, licence and usually a credit card for the deposit. Visitors from many countries (incl. the EU, UK and US) can drive with their national licence; others need an IDP. Speed cameras are everywhere and fines are high. Fuel is inexpensive.

See cars in the UAEThe Emirates are compact and connected by perfect highways: Dubai to Abu Dhabi takes an hour and a half, the mountains of Ras Al Khaimah about an hour. A car for one or two days is the easiest way to travel between emirates.

Most comfortable from October to April. Summer is very hot (up to 45°C), but tours and rentals are noticeably cheaper.

Cards are accepted almost everywhere. A little cash in dirhams helps at souks and small cafés.
Tourist SIMs from du and Etisalat are sold at the airport with a passport; an eSIM is even easier. Some VoIP calls may not work.
Driving is on the right and roads are excellent. Cameras are everywhere — follow the posted limits (often 100–140 km/h on highways). Dubai’s Salik tolls are charged automatically and added after return. Zero alcohol tolerance. No desert driving in rental cars.
