Travelling in Montenegro: what to know

Montenegro is small: the sea and the mountains are less than an hour apart. In one day by car you can drive around the Bay of Kotor, climb the serpentine to Lovćen and be back in Budva for sunset.

Ostrog Monastery, the Tara and Morača canyons and Lake Skadar are easier with a guide — the roads are demanding and a guide adds context to the trip.

When to go

Beach season is June to September; May and October are great for sightseeing and mountain trips.

Entry & documents

EU, UK and US citizens can visit visa-free for up to 90 days. You must register within 24 hours of arrival — hotels do this for you; ask your host in apartments.

Licence & rental

Most foreign licences are accepted; an IDP is recommended and required by some companies for non-Latin licences. Minimum age 21–23, 2 years of experience, deposits from €100–300.

Money & cards

The currency is the euro. Cards work in towns; carry cash for villages, beaches and parking.

SIM & internet

One, m:tel and Crnogorski Telekom SIMs are sold at kiosks; tourist plans are available. An eSIM is easiest.

Road rules

Driving is on the right. 50 km/h in towns, 80 outside, up to 100 on express roads. Dipped headlights are mandatory 24/7. Roads along the bay and in the mountains are narrow and winding. Toll sections include the Sozina tunnel and the new motorway. Alcohol limit 0.3‰.

What to pack

  • Passport
  • Licence + IDP
  • Euros in cash
  • Comfortable shoes for old towns
  • A warm layer for mountain trips

Entry and rental rules change from time to time — check your embassy’s website and the rental terms before you travel.
