What you need to rent a car and drive here as a visitor. Rules change — check with your rental company before the trip.
You need an International Driving Permit together with your EU/EEA licence.
You need an International Driving Permit together with your UK licence.
You need an International Driving Permit together with your US licence.
An IDP is required with the national licence (both 1949 and 1968 formats accepted in practice); scooters need a motorcycle category on the IDP. Bali police run frequent checks.
Toll roads (jalan tol, incl. Bali Mandara) are cashless — pay with a prepaid e-money card such as e-Toll/Flazz; ask the rental company for one.
Tip: In Bali most visitors rent scooters or a car with driver; roads are narrow and congested, and police checkpoints regularly fine tourists without a valid IDP or helmet.
