Driving in Portugal: licence and road rules
What you need to rent a car and drive here as a visitor. Rules change — check with your rental company before the trip.
An EU/EEA licence is fully valid in Portugal, just like at home.
A UK licence is valid on its own in Portugal — no IDP needed.
A US licence is legally valid, but rental desks or police may ask for an International Driving Permit — get one before you go.
Licences from 1949/1968 Convention states are accepted for non-residents (about 185 days); IDP advisable for licences not in Latin script.
Mix of booth tolls and electronic-only tolls; rental cars usually carry a Via Verde transponder (charged afterwards). Several former SCUT motorways became toll-free in 2025.
Tip: Take the rental's Via Verde transponder to avoid fines on electronic-only tolls; Lisbon and Porto old towns are steep with very narrow streets.
