Driving in Romania: licence and road rules
What you need to rent a car and drive here as a visitor. Rules change — check with your rental company before the trip.
An EU/EEA licence is fully valid in Romania, just like at home.
A UK licence is valid on its own in Romania — no IDP needed.
A US licence is legally valid, but rental desks or police may ask for an International Driving Permit — get one before you go.
Foreign licences recognised for short visits (about 90 days); IDP advisable for non-EU licences, especially those not in Latin script.
Electronic vignette (rovinieta) required on national roads — rental cars usually have it included. Separate tolls for the Fetești bridges (A2) and Giurgiu bridge, payable online/SMS or at booths.
Tip: Transfăgărășan and Transalpina mountain roads are open only in summer (roughly July–October); watch for horse carts on rural roads.
