Driving in Spain: licence and road rules
What you need to rent a car and drive here as a visitor. Rules change — check with your rental company before the trip.
An EU/EEA licence is fully valid in Spain, just like at home.
A UK licence is valid on its own in Spain — no IDP needed.
You need an International Driving Permit together with your US licence.
DGT: a non-EU licence must be in Spanish or have an official translation, so in practice you need an IDP. UK licences are accepted on their own for visitors.
Many former toll autopistas are now free; the remaining ones are paid at booths (cards accepted) or by Via-T tag.
Tip: Big cities have low-emission zones (ZBE), and older cars without a DGT environmental sticker may be fined. Rental cars are usually compliant, but check the rules before driving into central Madrid or Barcelona.

Typically 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h outside towns and 120 km/h on motorways. 30 km/h on single-lane urban streets; 20 km/h on shared-surface streets. Always follow the signs — cameras are common and fines reach you via the rental company.

What is the drink-driving limit?
The limit is 0.5 ‰ blood alcohol (0.3 for novice (under 2 years) and professional drivers). The safest rule is not to drink at all before driving.
