Driving in Turkey: licence and road rules
What you need to rent a car and drive here as a visitor. Rules change — check with your rental company before the trip.
An EU/EEA licence is valid on its own in Turkey — no IDP needed.
A UK licence is valid on its own in Turkey — no IDP needed.
A US licence is legally valid, but rental desks or police may ask for an International Driving Permit — get one before you go.
Foreign licences are valid for tourists for up to 6 months; an IDP is recommended for non-Latin or US licences.
Motorways and Bosphorus bridges use the electronic HGS tag only (no cash). Rental cars come with HGS, and the rental company charges tolls afterwards.
Tip: On Antalya-coast and mountain roads, watch for slow trucks and aggressive overtaking. Speed and red-light cameras are common, and fines reach you through the rental company.
