Licence & road rules

Driving in Vietnam: licence and road rules

What you need to rent a car and drive here as a visitor. Rules change — check with your rental company before the trip.

EU / EEA licence
IDP required

You need an International Driving Permit together with your EU/EEA licence.

UK licence
IDP required

You need an International Driving Permit together with your UK licence.

US licence
Local permit

A US licence and IDP are not enough — a local temporary driving permit is required.

National licences are not valid alone; you need a 1968-format IDP together with the licence. US IDPs are 1949-format, which Vietnam does not recognise, so a Vietnamese licence is needed. Self-drive rentals are rare, and a car with a driver is the norm.

Expressways and BOT roads use barrier-free electronic tolling (ETC: VETC/ePass); cars must have a tag, and rental cars normally do.

Tip: Traffic is dominated by motorbikes that flow around you: drive slowly and predictably, and use the horn sparingly as a warning. Hiring a car with a driver is cheap and usually wiser.

    Confirmed by the company
  4. Get the keys

Bring your passport and driving licence. The car is handed over at the office, the airport or, often, at your hotel.
