Car rental in Turkey

Most rental companies accept a national driving licence in Latin script; an International Driving Permit is recommended. Minimum age is usually 21, the deposit is blocked on a card, and some cars come with no deposit. Coastal highways are excellent; tolls are paid via the HGS tag already fitted in rental cars.

Travelling in Turkey: what to know

Turkey is a country where tours and a rental car work perfectly together. Pamukkale and Cappadocia are best visited with a group — the drive is long and a guide brings the history to life. The coast from Kemer to Kaş, Ölüdeniz and the ancient Lycian cities are best explored by car, stopping at coves tour buses never reach.

Our catalogue covers Antalya, Istanbul, Alanya, Kemer, Side, Bodrum, Fethiye and Izmir. In every city you will find tours and, if you want one, a car from a local rental company.

When to go

Beach season runs from May to October. For Istanbul and ancient sites, April–June and September–November are the most comfortable.

Entry & documents

You need a passport valid well beyond your trip (often at least 150 days on entry — check with your airline). Most EU, UK and US passport holders can visit visa-free for up to 90 days; rules depend on your nationality.

Licence & rental

A national licence in Latin script is accepted for tourist stays; an International Driving Permit is recommended. Minimum age 21, 1–2 years of driving experience. The deposit is blocked on a card; some cars need none.

Money & cards

Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted. Carry some Turkish lira in cash for markets, taxis and small towns; exchange offices (döviz) usually beat airport rates.

SIM & internet

A travel eSIM bought before departure is the easiest option. Local SIMs from Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom are sold with a passport.

Road rules

Driving is on the right. Limits: 50 km/h in towns, 90 outside, 120 on toll motorways. Tolls are paid via the HGS tag in rental cars and charged after return. Blood alcohol limit is 0.5‰ — fines are high.

What to pack

  • Passport valid long enough
  • Licence + International Driving Permit
  • Credit card for the car deposit
  • Travel eSIM
  • Scarf and covered shoulders for mosques
  • Sunscreen and water

Entry and rental rules change from time to time — check your embassy’s website and the rental terms before you travel.

Travel FAQ: Turkey

The essentials, so you can plan your trip with confidence.

Do I need an International Driving Permit in Turkey?

A national licence in Latin script is accepted for tourist stays, but an IDP is recommended and some rental companies ask for it.

Tour or rental car — which is better value?

For long trips like Pamukkale, Cappadocia or Ephesus, a group tour is easier and better value. For the coast and short trips, a car often costs less than two or three tours.

Are tours available in English?

Yes, most tours in popular resorts are run in English.

Do I need a visa for Turkey?

Most EU, UK and US citizens can visit visa-free for up to 90 days. Check the rules for your passport before travelling.

How do I pay tolls in a rental car?

Through the HGS tag on the windscreen — the rental company charges tolls after you return the car.

Is there a dress code for mosques?

Yes: covered shoulders and knees, and a headscarf for women. Large mosques lend scarves at the entrance.
